Day 211: Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup horses, Grandstand

Grass wasn't a problem. We all rocked our heels.

"The celebration that stops a nation"
Every year the men and women of Australia get dressed up and spend the day drinking and betting on the horse races at the track or at home. The races take place in Melbourne which is exactly why it was a must-do for us. It's a very Melbourne thing to do and it's only a quick train ride away. We bought our dresses, fascinators (our little hats), prepared our blanket, and headed to the Melbourne Cup.

Women were dressed fabulously and the men looked dapper. We had a good group of girls and had a great time downing about 7 bottles of champagne. Tee's fascinator was a huge hit! Many people watched her as she passed by and many even asked if they could take a photo with her! We had a great spot on the grass. We were sitting right in front of the start/finish line and in front of The Grandstand which is where the horses are paraded pre-race and crowned after the race!

The best part of this day is that we get the day off of work! It's a holiday! woot! woot!

Day 210: Drinks & Jail

Happy Halloween!

The day started off slowly. We had a quick coffee at No. 5 Cafe in DeGraves Ln. Then, I took the girls around St. Kilda but made sure we got back in time for night candle light tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol (<-- Jail). It was spooky!! But maybe it was because we had a few bubbly watermelon martinis at Meat & Wine Co. for dinner.

Halloween is not big in Australia at all. It was a little sad walking around on Halloween and only seeing a handful of people (mostly teens) dressed up on costume. It's times like these that make me miss home.

Day 209: Zombies in Melbourne!

As we walked around the city we noticed some of the people looked a bit ..... dead.

Amy Winehouse ... so wrong lol

Best makeup we saw
We are convinced this mofo wasn't dressed up. Eeeek! He caught me!

Brighton Beach Boxes

Enjoying a Hawthorn Pilsner on the beach!

Our wind surfing friend! He did some tricks for us and we cheer out loud!
We shopped for my fascinator today! You'll see a picture in a later post.

We took the ladies to see the Brighton Beach boxes, enjoyed a cold beer on the cold beach, made a wind surfer friend.... oh, and we were attacked by Zombies!

Day 208: Rose St. = Fitzroy Little Treasure

The ladies returned from Sydney so we headed out to show them our "everyday" Melbourne. We did A LOT today. Our first stop was the must-see QV Market to pick up some souvenirs for the girls to take back home. Then we hopped on the tram and took them to Brunswick St which always surprises us! We always discover something new when we walk around that strip. We had lunch at the Veggie Bar which did not disappoint. I had the Fungi Pizza ... it had mushrooms marinated in red wine and it was delicious. We walked up and down Brunswick and eventually ended up at Little Creatures Brewery for a few cold beer.  Yes, I drink beer now. Go figure. Finally, I can't go to Brunswick St. without stopping by my favorite florist. I picked up some stained pink roses and some other accent flowers on branches that I forgot to ask (again!) sorry! The girls helped me pick out the bunch.

King Pin Bowling
Day 202 was filled with laughter, sightseeing, and enjoying each other's company. We took the ladies to a "must-do" when in Victoria (the Australian state that Melbourne is in): The Great Ocean Road Tour. It was a full day trip that included these stops:

So, as you can see there were plenty of things to see along Victoria's beautiful coast. As we rode the bus and stopped off at each location we marveled at the natural beauty that surrounded us.

We weren't tired after the day trip so we headed over to King Pin for some drinks and silly bowling (as usual!).
